What is Industrial Engineering?
Due to the wide variety of industries in which industrial engineers work, it is difficult to provide a formal definition and draw boundaries for industrial engineering. However, the following definition provided by the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) in the United States is widely accepted:
"Industrial engineering deals with the design, improvement, development, integration, installation, and management of systems that produce goods and services using inputs such as energy, equipment, information, materials, and people. To achieve this, industrial engineers integrate specialized knowledge and skills from mathematics, physical sciences, and social sciences with engineering analysis and design methods and principles. By using a multidisciplinary approach, they simplify complex problems and provide cost-effective solutions through scientific methods."
